The Hike Is Priced In.
The Guidance Isn't.
Week of September 15 · GOOGL · HCA · LITE
This morning's CPI pushed the odds of a Wednesday rate hike to roughly 90%[cite: 10]. At those odds the hike itself is old news[cite: 10]. What moves your account is the sentence that comes after it.[cite: 10]
Seasonality Finds the Window. Option Insanity Finds the Trade.
This watchlist answers one question extremely well: when has the calendar been on your side?[cite: 10] That is a powerful filter — and it is only ever half of the job[cite: 10]. The other half is what you actually put on once you are there[cite: 10].
Option Insanity comes at the market from a completely different angle[cite: 10]. It is the SmartTrading team's option-scan work, and it is open to you now — a second lens for traders who would rather not run on one signal alone[cite: 10].
Everything you need — what it looks for, how it works and how to get access — is on the page[cite: 10].

August CPI arrived Friday at +0.4% for the month and 3.4% year-over-year, both matching the Dow Jones consensus[cite: 10]. Core rose 0.3% — a tenth hotter than expected — with the twelve-month core at 2.4%[cite: 10]. Both readings remain comfortably above the Fed's 2% target, and odds of a Wednesday hike promptly climbed to around 90%[cite: 10].
The path here was brutal for anyone positioned the other way[cite: 10]. A month ago the odds sat near 48%[cite: 10]. Then came a blowout September 4 jobs report with August payrolls at 162,000, a hotter-than-expected PPI on Thursday that pushed odds past 73%, and rising oil prices tied to Middle East supply disruption[cite: 10]. Treasury yields are holding near multiyear highs after a sharp bond selloff[cite: 10]. Warsh told Jackson Hole that returning inflation to target was his primary focus[cite: 10]. The market has finally taken him at his word[cite: 10].
Here is the part most coverage will get wrong next week.[cite: 10] At 90% odds, a quarter-point hike is already in the price[cite: 10]. Buying or selling on the decision itself is trading a headline everyone has read[cite: 10]. The real event on Wednesday is the guidance — whether the committee signals one-and-done, or opens the door to December[cite: 10].
Which is why this week's three names were chosen to sit on different sides of that answer[cite: 10]. A mega-cap with a fortress balance sheet, the cheapest defensive name on the board, and the highest-beta AI play we could find[cite: 10]. One question, three different exposures to it.[cite: 10]
The giant on sale
GOOGL takes two of the four columns: the highest frequency on the list at 89.47% and the highest annualized return at +91.97%, with a healthy 10.45 profit factor and a 76.19% win rate[cite: 10]. No weak spot anywhere in the row[cite: 10].
Here is why that matters right now[cite: 10]. Alphabet has slid roughly 10% over the past thirty days, from about $372 down to the mid-$330s[cite: 10]. It is sitting essentially on its 200-day moving average near $340 and below its 50-day near $347[cite: 10]. The 52-week range runs from $225 to $404[cite: 10]. This is not a broken chart[cite: 10]. It is a mega-cap that has quietly handed back a quarter of its year[cite: 10].
The business behind it did not shrink[cite: 10]. Quarterly revenue came in around $119.8 billion at a gross margin near 81.5% — the search and cloud engines are still throwing off enormous cash[cite: 10]. Gemini has been shipping fast, with the 3.8 Flash model and a cybersecurity variant aimed at government and enterprise, plus Gemini Robotics ER 2 on the physical-AI side[cite: 10].
On September 3 a federal judge rejected the Department of Justice's request that Google divest AdX, its ad exchange[cite: 10]. That removes one of the two structural threats that has hung over the stock, and it follows the earlier ruling that let Google keep Chrome and Android[cite: 10]. The single biggest overhang on this name keeps resolving in its favour[cite: 10].
The FTC is reportedly in the final stages of a YouTube investigation over consumer-protection issues, with a lawsuit said to be in preparation[cite: 10]. Google has already settled with the UK over Play Store practices for about $353 million and is rewriting European policy to avoid antitrust fines[cite: 10]. Separately, 2026 capex guidance of $175–$185 billion more than doubles last year — Barclays has flagged that infrastructure and Waymo costs will weigh on profitability all year[cite: 10].
GOOGL is the highest-quality setup on this week's list and the numbers agree: best frequency, best annualized return, no weak column[cite: 10]. It is on offer because of a 10% drawdown and a legal docket that keeps generating headlines — even as the biggest of those headlines just broke its way[cite: 10]. Watch the capex line, not the lawsuits[cite: 10].
The one that wins most often
HCA is the metronome[cite: 10]. An 85.71% annual win rate is the highest figure on this list and the highest we have printed in some time[cite: 10]. The trade-off sits in the profit factor: 5.47, the lowest of the three.[cite: 10] Wins often, wins modestly[cite: 10].
That is exactly the personality you would expect from the largest hospital operator in the United States[cite: 10]. Demand for emergency rooms and surgical suites does not care much about the business cycle, and the Q2 numbers showed it: revenue of roughly $20.23 billion against a $19.39 billion consensus, net income near $1.70 billion or $7.62 per diluted share, adjusted EBITDA around $4.03 billion, with same-facility admissions up 2.5%[cite: 10].
And yet the stock is down roughly 13% year to date, trading near $405 against a 52-week range of $354 to $557[cite: 10]. It changes hands at a P/E near 13.6 with a PEG around 1.33 — and on Simply Wall St's fair-multiple framework, a business with HCA's margins and scale would screen closer to 26.7x[cite: 10]. Cantor Fitzgerald has an Overweight rating and a $525 target on it[cite: 10].
HCA declared a $0.78 quarterly dividend payable September 30, with the record date falling Wednesday, September 16 — the same day the Fed announces[cite: 10]. If you want the payment, the calendar is specific and it is next week[cite: 10].
In July, HCA cut its 2026 EPS guidance to $28.70–$30.50 from $29.10–$31.50, blaming a worsening payer mix as patients lost coverage on the health-insurance exchanges — an estimated $400 million hit to pre-tax income in a single quarter[cite: 10]. The stock fell around 10% premarket and logged five straight down days[cite: 10]. There is also a securities-fraud investigation from Pomerantz circling, and union activity that could pressure staffing costs[cite: 10]. Forecast earnings growth of about 4.6% a year trails the broader market badly[cite: 10].
HCA offers the best win rate on this list attached to the cheapest valuation — a defensive, admissions-driven business at 13.6x earnings with a $525 Overweight target and a dividend record date inside the window[cite: 10]. The reason it is cheap is real: a guidance cut driven by patients losing insurance, a fraud investigation, and growth that trails the market[cite: 10]. Highest hit rate, smallest swing[cite: 10].
The rocket that already launched
LITE's row is the most balanced of the three and leads none of it: an 80% frequency (lowest here), an 8.8 profit factor, a +79.42% annualized return and an 80% win rate[cite: 10]. Solid everywhere, spectacular nowhere — which is a strange thing to say about a stock that is up 122% year to date.[cite: 10]
Lumentum makes the optical and photonic components that move data inside AI data centres — lasers, transceivers, the physical layer that is rapidly replacing copper as interconnect distances and speeds outgrow what wire can carry[cite: 10]. It joined the S&P 500 this year, and August's fiscal Q4 print beat with an upbeat forecast[cite: 10].
Then Tuesday happened[cite: 10]. The stock jumped about 11% on September 8 as Deutsche Bank initiated at Buy with a $1,200 target, calling Lumentum's III-V laser technology critical across every future optical architecture, and Evercore ISI started it at Outperform with $1,100[cite: 10]. Citi went to $1,200[cite: 10]. Management lifted long-term guidance and floated roughly $40 of earnings power by fiscal 2028[cite: 10]. Street targets now cluster near $1,140[cite: 10].
Deutsche Bank named Lumentum and Coherent its highest-conviction picks among hardware names in the AI era — the thesis being that Lumentum wins whether the industry lands on pluggable optics or co-packaged optics[cite: 10]. The connectivity bottleneck is the trade[cite: 10].
Three things[cite: 10]. One: LITE trades near $931 while independent fair-value work sits closer to $863 — below the price, having been cut from $802 and revised repeatedly as the stock outran the models[cite: 10]. Two: the P/E is negative; this is not yet a GAAP-profitable company[cite: 10]. Three: the company president sold 1,500 shares at an average $912.33 — roughly $1.4 million — and BofA sits at Neutral with a $1,000 target it recently lowered[cite: 10]. Washington is also scrutinising Chinese-supplied optical transceivers in US data centres, which cuts both ways for the supply chain[cite: 10].
LITE is the cleanest pure play on the AI connectivity bottleneck, with two fresh initiations at $1,100–$1,200 and a credible path to $40 of earnings power[cite: 10]. It also has the weakest frequency on this list, a negative P/E, insider selling, and a price already above some fair-value estimates after a 122% year[cite: 10]. Great business, late entry — size it for the gap between those two facts[cite: 10].

Wednesday will be loud. Your decisions were made on Friday.
There is a specific kind of stress that comes from making a trading decision while the news is breaking[cite: 10]. Super Seasonal exists to move that decision earlier — to a quiet moment, with the full statistical profile in front of you, before anyone is shouting[cite: 10].
The goal was never to trade more[cite: 10]. It was to trade fewer, better-prepared ideas — and to spend Wednesday watching the Fed instead of scrambling because of it[cite: 10].

One decision on Wednesday, three very different ways to be exposed to it[cite: 10].
Notice the ladder[cite: 10]. HCA wins most often and moves least. LITE moves most and wins least often. GOOGL sits in between and leads three of four columns.[cite: 10] If Wednesday's guidance is hawkish, the long-duration AI name takes the hardest hit and the hospital operator barely notices[cite: 10]. If it reads one-and-done, that ordering flips[cite: 10]. You are not being asked to guess which — you are being handed three different answers so the week is not a single bet[cite: 10].
And one honest note on entries[cite: 10]. GOOGL is down 10% in a month[cite: 10]. HCA is down 13% on the year[cite: 10]. LITE is up 122% and jumped 11% on Tuesday[cite: 10]. Two of these are discounts and one is a chase[cite: 10]. The statistics do not distinguish between those — but your position sizing should[cite: 10].

Next week the Fed moves, and every open position in the market gets re-priced on one sentence of guidance[cite: 10]. Weeks like that are exactly when a single point of view starts to feel thin[cite: 10].
